06 July 2024

1. The Azawakh dog originates from West Africa and has been bred for hunting and companionship purposes.

2. This elegant and slender breed has been cherished by nomadic tribes such as the Tuareg, Fulani, and Effarouch.

3. Their history can be traced back over a thousand years, as they were highly prized by the ancient Tuareg people.

4. Azawakhs were bred for their speed, agility, and strong prey drive, making them excellent hunters for small game and even wild boar.

5. These dogs were also valued for their loyalty and were often used to protect livestock and their owners' camps.

6. Unfortunately, the Azawakh almost became extinct due to interbreeding with other dog breeds and harsh living conditions in their native land.

7. A French couple discovered the rare Azawakh in the 1970s and began a breeding program to revive the breed.

8. Today, the Azawakh remains a rare breed and is recognized by major kennel clubs such as the American Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club.
